Artlines: Barkcloth Across the Pacific
In the third issue of Artlines for 2009, long-serving ABC foreign correspondent Sean Dorney examines the social and political landscape of the Pacific Islands, with reference to the cultural significance of tapa cloth, and we preview ‘Paperskin: Barkcloth across the Pacific’, an exhibition of delicately patterned textiles and stunning large sculptural works and ceremonial objects, opening in late October.
This issue of Artlines looks at current and upcoming exhibitions, with a focus on Australia and the Pacific. We report on the ‘Easton Pearson’ exhibition, describing the designers’ varied sources of inspiration from Africa, Asia and Pacific and collaborations with local visual artists, and preview the ‘6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’.
Other exhibitions featured in this edition include ‘The view from elsewhere’, ‘Floating Life: Contemporary Indigenous Fibre Art’, ‘Nurreegoo: The Art and Life of Ron Hurley 1946–2002’, ‘150 Years: Photography in Queensland from the Gallery’s Collection, ‘Tim Johnson: Painting Ideas’, and the upcoming program of Peter Greenaway films including a performance by Greenaway himself, as well our regular mix of reviews of books and films.
Artlines is published four times a year (March, June, September and December).
