Artlines magazine: The 6th Asia Pacific Triennial issue
The final edition of Artlines for 2009 is largely dedicated to the sixth in the series of the Queensland Art Gallery’s flagship exhibition, the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT). Since the first Triennial in 1993, the APT has grown in scope attracting over 1.3 million visitors and taking on new and exciting forms. APT6 expands again to include over 100 artists, many from countries not previously featured in an APT, including Tibet, Turkey, Iran, Cambodia and Myanmar. Three multi-artist projects add an even greater dimension across several disciplines: The Mekong project and the Mansudae Art Studio from North Korea (both featured in this issue), and the Pacific Reggae Project.
For this issue we interviewed three people associated with APT6: Raafat Ishak, a Melbourne-based artist born in Cairo; Rose Issa, a specialist in film and visual art of the Middle East; and Nicholas Bonner who is closely involved with projects in North Korea.
We introduce the ‘Artist’s Choice’ series with distinguished Queensland-based painter Lawrence Daws and feature a world-class design exhibition from the Victoria and Albert Museum: ‘Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones’, and the newly reopened Australian collection galleries. In this edition we also explore a set of sculptures from Vanuatu and Tibetan artist Gonkar Gyatsos’ gripping Angel, profile longtime benefactor Patrick Corrigan, and include our regular mix of reviews of books and films.
Artlines is published four times a year (March, June, September and December).
