Artlines: The China Issue
In the first issue of Artlines for 2009, former Beijing-based correspondent for the Australian Rowan Callick reveals the next chapter of China’s history; Ben Cho writes on acclaimed Chinese filmmakers Xie Jin, Zhang Yimou and Jia Zhang-ke; we talk with Gallery patrons and contemporary Chinese art collectors Nicholas Jose and Claire Roberts; and Kim Machan reviews filmmaker Jia Zhang-ke’s award-winning Sanxia Haoren (Still Life) 2006.
The Gallery’s Andrew Clark and Lynne Seear explore programming and writing for children in a contemporary art gallery, Glenn R Cooke writes on the current ‘LJ Harvey and His Times’ exhibition, and David Burnett introduces us to the upcoming exhibition ‘American Impressionism and Realism: A Landmark Exhibition from the Met’, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. We look at the Gallery’s newest acquisitions, including Xu Zhen’s installation work ShanghART Supermarket (Australia) 2007–08, five Chinese Neolithic jars from the Gallery’s Asian art collection, and works by contemporary Indigenous Australian artists.
William Yang’s My Generation performance at the National Portrait Gallery is reviewed, along with a number of films and publications. Artlines also pays tribute to Sir Bruce Watson, AC, Cambodian artist Svay Ken, and former Gallery Director Raoul Mellish.
Artlines is published four times a year (March, June, September and December).
