Artlines: The ‘Optimism’ issue

Issue 4–2008 (December)
56 pages paperback colour

The December–February issue of Artlines celebrates ‘Contemporary Australia: Optimism’, the first exhibition in a new triennial series displaying the works of more than 60 artists. In this issue, we follow the making of ‘Optimism’ artist Scott Redford’s The High / Perpetual Xmas, No Abstractions 2008 — a three-metre-tall sculpture outside the Gallery of Modern Art, and focus on the Children’s Art Centre with Kids: Contemporary Australia, which sees ‘Optimism’ artists develop interactive kids’ programs as part of the exhibition.

We also preview ‘The China Project’, interview long-term Gallery benefactors Margaret Mittelheuser, AM, and Cathryn Mittelheuser, AM, look at artist multiples and introduce new acquisitions. David Burnett compares the art of Alexander Coosemans and Aernout Mik, and Bruce McLean writes on ‘Culture Warriors: National Indigenous Triennial’— on tour from the National Gallery of Australia.

The usual mix of art, print and film reviews is also featured.

Artlines is published four times a year (March, June, September and December).
