Daphne Mayo: Let There Be Sculpture

Judith McKay and Michael Hawker
96 pages paperback colour and black-and-white illustrations

Daphne Mayo (1895—1982) was Australia’s leading woman sculptor of the mid twentieth century and a passionate advocate of the visual arts. She created some of Brisbane’s grandest monuments, notably the Brisbane City Hall tympanum and the Queensland Women’s War Memorial at Anzac Square. This richly illustrated publication accompanies the first retrospective exhibition by a state gallery of Mayo’s work and explores the artist’s remarkable career — her series of portraits, her major monuments and her art advocacy, including the establishment of the Queensland Art Fund and the Godfrey Rivers Trust, which transformed the Queensland Art Gallery Collection with many fine works of contemporary art.

Daphne Mayo: Let There Be Sculpture is the first substantial publication on the artist in 30 years and includes a selected bibliography and list of public commissions.

The exhibition ‘Daphne Mayo: Let There Be Sculpture’ will be at the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, 5 November 2011 – 15 January 2012.
