Katharina Grosse: Picture Park
German artist Katharina Grosse is among the most exciting and innovative abstract painters working today. Her exhibition ‘Picture Park’ is the first in a series of solo international project exhibitions at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in Brisbane, Australia.
Painting with a spray gun, Grosse responds to a space’s architecture and ambience by working directly on the windows, floors, ceilings and walls. Critics have suggested a remarkable array of influences on her work: from 1980s New York graffiti, to Florentine frescoes, colour-field painting, psychedelia, German Expressionism, performance and installation art. Her works challenge our expectations of painting, embracing the history of the medium while opening it up to unforeseen possibilities.
Featuring many full-colour illustrations of the project, Katharina Grosse: Picture Park includes an essay on the artist’s practice by Nicholas Chambers, Assistant Curator, International Art, Queensland Art Gallery; and an interview with the artist by Robert Leonard, Director, Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane.
Published by the Queensland Art Gallery to document ‘Katharina Grosse: Picture Park’, at GoMA.
