LJ Harvey and His Times
Lewis Jarvis Harvey (1871–1949) was the most important practitioner and teacher in the Arts and Crafts Movement in Queensland and a figure of national significance. Harvey was a noted teacher, sculptor, woodcarver and potter who influenced generations of craft students. This eight-page exhibition brochure features an essay by Glenn R Cooke, Research Curator, Queensland Heritage at the Queensland Art Gallery as well as illustrations of some of Harvey’s most important works in the Gallery’s Collection, including the remarkable Bed of Peace 1919. Made by Harvey as a 21st birthday present for his eldest daughter, Elsie, it is one of the most significant examples of symbolist furniture in Australia.
