Lloyd Rees: Early Brisbane Drawings

Michael Hawker
92 pages paperback illustrated

Brisbane-born painter and draftsman Lloyd Rees (1895–1988) is one of Australia’s most recognised and awarded landscape artists. He deftly captures the effects of light and form in his works, for which he twice received the prestigious Wynne Prize. Lloyd Rees: Early Brisbane Drawings documents a number of significant early drawings he made in Brisbane in the first decades of the twentieth century. These are selected from works generously gifted by Alan and Jan Rees (the artist’s son and daughter-in-law), honouring the important connection that Lloyd Rees had with Queensland, especially in his early development as a draftsman and artist, with an A5 sketchbook format publication with more than 70 plate pages.

Lloyd Rees: Early Brisbane Drawings has been published on the occasion of ‘Lloyd Rees: Life and Light’, an exhibition held in the Xstrata Coal Queensland Artists’ Gallery, Queensland Art Gallery, 12 March – 13 June 2011.
