Sparse Shadows, Flying Pearls: A Japanese Screen Revealed

48 pages paperback colour illustrations

This publication profiles the pair of six-fold screens by the Japanese artist Unkoku Tôeki (1591–1644) in the Collection of the Queensland Art Gallery. These seventeenth-century screens depict Chinese poets Li Bai (701–62) and Lin Bu (967–1028) and their attendants amid an imagined Chinese landscape. Richly illustrated with works from the Gallery’s Collection and various Australian and overseas institutions, Sparse Shadows, Flying Pearls: A Japanese Screen Revealed interprets the iconography of the Tôeki screens against the backdrop of the dynamic and competitive political matrix of late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Japan.
